The board approved two facilities contracts after staff addressed trustee questions about added costs and scope.
Design amendments to a Perkins Eastman contract for a Southeast Academy flagpole rose after the Department of State Architects (DSA) required a full submittal and path‑of‑travel review for accessibility. Edith (facilities staff) explained the extra fees were for architect time and required DSA review, not for additional construction scope. "They assumed an over‑the‑counter check; DSA required a full submittal once a plan checker reviewed the project," staff said.
Trustees also approved a nearly $738,000 contract to replace lockers at John Glenn High School, covering exterior and interior locker rooms and team rooms. Board members questioned apparent duplicate installation line items and whether lockers would include locks; staff confirmed installation charges covered distinct components and noted exterior locker users commonly provide locks themselves. Staff said wall repairs from removed lockers were not included in the current scope and would be addressed later.
Why it matters: These are visible capital improvements that affect students’ daily experience and campus aesthetics. Trustees sought assurances about procurement, contingency planning and long‑term maintenance costs before voting.
What’s next: Work will proceed with vendor coordination and the facilities department will return to the board with any change orders or remaining site repairs.
