A troop of Girl Scouts (70932) presented to council during the audience portion and described a proposal for a pollinator sanctuary in one of the city's public parks. The scouts said their plan would prioritize native plantings, reduce maintenance needs over time, involve volunteers for establishment and upkeep, and provide educational programming for residents and students.
"What we are mainly asking from the city tonight is permission and support to establish the sanctuary in [a] public park," a troop representative said. The troop said they would lead fundraising, organize volunteers and partner with community organizations and city staff to maintain the space, and they noted potential future additions such as educational workshops and citizen-science projects.
Council responded positively, commended the scouts and indicated staff (Community Services and Parks) would coordinate on site selection and next steps.
Provenance: Troop introduced by an attendee and presented detailed plan during the audience-comment segment; the mayor and council praised the initiative.
