Peekskill approves free summer environmental program with Environmental Leaders of Color

The Peekskill Common Council voted May 12 to authorize a memorandum of understanding with Environmental Leaders of Color (ELOC) to run a free summer teen energy and environmental program at the youth bureau.
City Manager Matt introduced the item and the youth bureau’s executive director detailed program logistics. The director said, “The youth love it. They absolutely love it,” and that the program will serve 20 high‑school students for roughly 4–4.5 hours per week over six weeks from June 30 through Aug. 7, with no cost to the city. Council members and staff discussed scheduling, transportation and the possibility of a water‑department tour.
Councilmember discussion noted the program’s age shift from earlier years (it previously served younger youth) and emphasized partner involvement. The council approved the resolution establishing the MOU; the vote was recorded as unanimous. City staff said they will incorporate field trips and coordinate with DPW and the water department on hands‑on activities.
Next steps: the MOU will be executed and staff will finalize participant selection and the program schedule. The youth bureau and ELOC will lead outreach to recruit students.
