Public Works shows rotted dump bodies and warns of safety risks; council weighs replacements

Public Works staff told the council that several heavy vehicles and pickups in the fleet are severely corroded and that some components — including dump bodies and hydraulic lines — pose safety and reliability risks.
"This is our truck 71... the dump body that there's significant corrosion in the dump body. It will not hold any material," Public Works Director Chris Gross said while showing photos of multiple dump trucks, pickups and masonry trucks with rotted bodies and missing floors. He said corrosion is accelerated by winter salt use, that lines (hydraulic, fuel, transmission) are susceptible to failure, and that replacement dump bodies should use stainless steel or aluminum where practical to improve longevity.
Council members discussed options including portable or fixed truck‑wash/desalting bays, alternative de‑icing materials, and lifecycle tradeoffs between higher up‑front cost and longer service life. Gross said staff will use leasing and staging to spread capital costs and will return with procurement timing and cost estimates.
