Wahkiakum County OKs $10,000 for fairgrounds safety repairs as manager warns budget shortfall

Fairgrounds Manager Crystal Baker told the Wahkiakum County commissioners on June 2 that a recent clean-up had been successful but that multiple safety issues and repairs remain at the fairgrounds.
Baker asked the board to use a $10,000 line item in the county's public works budget for immediate repairs, including replacement of four damaged doors and all locks, and to arrange future assistance from Public Works for debris removal. The board approved the request unanimously (motion by Commissioner Mark Letham; second by Commissioner Lee Tischer). Baker also said the Fair's operating budget may run out before the end of the year, and that the Fair might need county assistance for insurance and labor costs.
The board had previously noted a $10,000 fairgrounds maintenance and repairs allocation in the county budget. Commissioners also discussed advertising several open positions, including a Handyman/Maintenance position, Assistant Fair Manager and fair-week labor staff. No formal additional budget appropriation beyond the $10,000 line item was adopted at the meeting.
