The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved two motions Aug. 4 to proclaim Aug. 7 as Purple Heart Day and to designate the county a Purple Heart County. Supervisor Janice Hahn, who co‑authored the item, said the actions will "pause to recognize extraordinary courage and sacrifice of Purple Heart recipients and their families" and direct the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs to work with veterans groups on commemorations.
Commander Zeferino John Madrigal III, commander of the California Military Order of the Purple Heart and a recipient, told the board that the designation is an "important" and lasting symbol and urged the county to follow through with signage, educational outreach and an implementation plan that includes a permanent memorial for county Purple Heart recipients. Supervisors Barger, Horvath, Solis and Mitchell also spoke in support; the board approved the motions without dissent.
