Piedmont recreation director outlines summer hiring, programs, and new child drop‑in pilot

She reported two near-complete projects — the batting cage at Coaches Field and parts pending for the pickleball courts — and detailed summer programming: Camp Everything (with four field trips including Gene Sweeney Park, Oakland Zoo, Alameda County Fair and USS Hornet), Puzzle Palooza, and a movie-in-the-park night on July 18. Shelley also described a new pilot called "The Hangout," aimed at 4th and 5th graders and hosted at Piedmont Community Church beginning July 30, offering a game room and supervised homework space.
The director answered commissioners’ questions about transportation for The Hangout (staff said the program will not provide regular transportation and will encourage walking across short distances) and confirmed fee-assistance and scholarship programs are available for Piedmont residents for Schoolmates and some recreation services.
