Park Commission subcommittee begins site visits for nonfunctional turf review and water-saving plan

Commissioners on the new nonfunctional-turf subcommittee said they have begun on-site scouting and plan further visits to roughly 10 irrigated turf areas across the park system to identify opportunities for conversion to lower-water landscapes.
Shanna Wagner and Dave Johnson said the subcommittee will produce suggested sites and possible uses for a Piedmont-based foundation (PBF) donation to support native planting and irrigation adjustments. Commissioners asked staff to quantify water savings where possible and to phase changes to avoid prolonged barren lawns in the short term; staff noted East Bay MUD has authority over some irrigation designations and that coordination with the water provider will be required.
