Piedmont students earn inaugural California State Seal of Civic Engagement; projects focus on Title IX and community access

Juliana, a senior, said she focused on Title IX and athletic equity, explaining that as “a female student athlete, Title 9 is not simply a law to me” and describing practical changes achieved by a district task force, including locker-room upgrades and a uniform rotation schedule. Ellen Gedickson described a civics project that examined how the recreation commission serves both youth and adults and proposed using social media to boost engagement.
Board members praised student leadership and asked for continued communication to expand the program. Staff said emblems will be placed on diplomas and transcripts and that the district will continue outreach to grow participation.
