The Plan Commission on Aug. 3 approved an exception to Stevens Point fencing standards to allow a 10-foot woven-wire privacy fence at 1233 Maria Drive, with the condition that the owner obtain a building permit before construction.
Staff explained that municipal code allows 6-foot fences in street and side yards and 10-foot fences only behind the rear wall of a house; the applicant sought a height exception for panels that fall within the side yard. City planner Adam told commissioners the commission has broad discretion under Chapter 23.01, sub. 16(g), and recommended approval with a permit condition. “For fence variance requests…you have ultimate flexibility, ultimate discretion to consider,” Adam said.
Applicant Mary Mortel Ferron, who identified herself as a part owner of the property, said the proposed fence is “woven wire, 10 feet, and it would be approximately 70 feet from the road,” and that the material would blend into the adjoining woodlot. Commissioners said the parcel’s wooded character, setback from the road, and neighbor support weighed in favor of granting a site-specific exception. One commissioner said visibility was a key factor in the vote and noted the applicant had checked with neighbors who reported no objection.
The motion to approve included the building-permit requirement and passed by voice vote.
