Council approves donated-fireworks contract after employee questions about pay

The council also approved closing the park on July 4 for the event and allowed a nursing-home fireworks event on July 3. The city stated the fireworks will be paid from donor-restricted funds.
City Employee Brad Gower questioned the decision during discussion, asking why money was being spent on fireworks rather than pay increases or library support. He said he had worked for the city seven years and "only makes $15.00 per hour." Mayor Kris Wyatt responded that "the money is donated and is to purchase fireworks not to be spent on anything else." Council approved the contract (motion by Jeff Roberts, second Heather Green) with roll-call approval by members present.
