Board adopts landfill fee increases after public hearing; tire fee questions linger
Summary
After a short public hearing, the board adopted advertised landfill fee increases. A public questioner pressed the county about how the advertised per‑ton tire fee will be applied to small residential disposals and suggested a per‑tire charge; staff said commercial loads are handled differently.

The Nottoway County Board of Supervisors opened and closed a public hearing April 17 on proposed landfill fee increases and subsequently adopted the fees as advertised.
Resident Sonny Abbott asked how the advertised tire fee—listed by ton—would apply to small residential disposals and whether it would be prorated for individuals bringing a few tires. Abbott suggested a per‑tire fee (for example, $5 per tire) as an alternative to a per‑ton commercial rate. Staff and board members explained that the per‑ton rate applies to commercial truckloads and that residents can bring a small number of tires (often a few at a time) without the same handling as commercial deliveries; the board retained the advertised fee language and voted to adopt the fee schedule.
The action clears the landfill fee schedule as advertised; staff said they will continue to handle routine residential drop‑offs separately from commercial truckloads and will provide clarification on implementation details as needed.
