Board approves 300‑foot Nottoway County communications tower to upgrade public‑safety radio system

County staff and CTA Consultants presented a special‑exception request to construct a 300‑foot self‑supporting radio tower on the health‑department parcel to support the countywide public‑safety radio system and to provide coverage across central and southeastern parts of the county. CTA explained that microwave‑link costs and the need to colocate near dispatch fiber and consoles constrained site options; the applicant requested a reduction in zoning setback requirements and proposed field‑marked setbacks, fencing with green slats and a 60×80‑foot compound.
CTA and Level Up Towers technicians addressed safety and FAA questions, saying the tower is engineered to fall within a 40‑foot radius of its center and that FAA review and lighting requirements will follow standard procedures. After discussion of alternatives, setbacks and notification of adjacent properties, the board voted to approve the special exception. "This 300 foot tower not only serves as interconnection between the rest of the radio system, but it also will provide coverage to a large area of central and southeastern part of the county," CTA said. The approval includes staff conditions, marking of drain fields and propane slab in the field, and revocation language for noncompliance.
