The Cookeville City Council recognized multiple residents and officers Aug. 6 with distinguished citizen and officer awards. Chief Winfrey described the events leading to each award: Peyton Norris, then 10, independently contacted emergency services and helped evacuate family members during a residential fire; Brian Reynolds and Sarah Keenan rescued a 7‑year‑old from a creek; Officer Chris Melton intervened in a violent in‑store disturbance and prevented further harm; and Detective Brandon Cooper was recognized for investigative work that led to indictments in serious criminal cases. "Peyton displayed exceptional courage, leadership, and maturity well beyond his years," Chief Winfrey said while presenting the award.
Council members and attendees offered personal remarks and thanks to the honorees and to city staff and officers for public‑safety work. The recognition segment included family and community applause; the mayor invited attendees to stay for the remainder of the meeting and thanked recipients and officers for their service.
