Lucas Young, reporting remotely for the Mid-Iowa Planning Alliance (MIPA), updated the Board on housing work supported by ARPA funds. Young said MIPA has been meeting with the Housing Action Plan Working Group to draft a Low and Moderate Income (LMI) Housing Support Program and has completed 12 housing needs assessments for smaller communities and unincorporated areas in Story County. He said data from the County Assessor indicates the existing housing stock is generally in good condition but that vacancy rates are low, "indicating need for additional housing units."
Young described coordination with school districts and cities to monitor community needs and suggested development could be encouraged through zoning updates. The assessments will be presented to the Board as an update to the 2021 housing study.
