Police Chief David Pernice updated the Union City Borough Council on local police staffing, saying the candidate approved at the previous meeting has not responded to repeated contact attempts. "He has tried to make contact but has had no luck. He is assuming he is no longer interested," Pernice said, and added he plans to reach out to the civil service commission to set up oral exams and to the regional hiring consortium.
Pernice said his long-term preference remains to hire two part‑time officers but that council had only approved one position. Council agreed with the approach to continue recruiting for a single part‑time officer at this time. No formal vote was required on staffing; the update was recorded as part of regular department reports.
