Chief Moody approved to serve as incident commander at Volk Field Patriot exercise

The commission unanimously approved Chief Moody’s participation in the Patriot exercise at Volk Field Combat Readiness Training Center in Camp Douglas, Wisconsin, during the week of Aug. 24, 2026. City and fire staff described Patriot as a large, multinational preparedness exercise integrating National Guard, Reserve, active duty and international partners alongside FEMA, Wisconsin Emergency Management, and the Red Cross.
Chief Moody briefed the commission on the exercise’s scope — multiple operational periods, simulated structural collapses, search operations, mass casualty incidents and working with incident management teams — and said serving as an incident commander would be “a great opportunity” to bring advanced knowledge back to Stevens Point. Commissioners characterized Moody’s participation as an honor and approved the action by voice vote.
The action allows Chief Moody to be on duty while attending the exercise and to serve with a multiagency incident management team; staff said they expect the experience to benefit local disaster response planning and training.
