Commission approves up to $10,000 to study repairs and maintenance for county debris basins

The commission voted Aug. 4 to task engineering firm Johansson & Tuttle with producing feasibility estimates and plans for debris-basin maintenance around Huntington Canyon, Straight Canyon, Orangeville and near the Castle Dale water-treatment area.
Commissioners said maintaining existing flood-control structures is a prerequisite for pursuing new watershed projects. The motion approved a cap of up to $10,000 for the engineering estimate and planning work, with commissioners noting flood-fund and previously budgeted debris-maintenance money as possible sources. "We need to demonstrate that we're taking care of the ones that we've got," one commissioner said during discussion.
The engineers will report back with cost estimates on repairs such as riprap replacement, fencing and other maintenance needs so the county can prioritize work and preserve watershed protections in advance of larger projects.
Next steps: Johansson & Tuttle to return with a written estimate and recommended priorities for maintenance and repair; funding will be allocated from flood-related budgets if appropriate.
