Police urge caution as schools reopen; crossing-guard vacancies remain

Captain James Williams of the Metro Nashville Police Department's traffic division urged motorists to expect heavier traffic and to slow down as students return to school. "We urge commuters to leave earlier than normal next week and to anticipate heavier traffic," Williams said, and he stressed enforcement of the 15-mph limit in active school zones.
Williams provided staffing details for crossing guards: 103 part-time school crossing guards will staff intersections and crosswalks outside 68 elementary and middle schools where children walk unaccompanied, and the department currently has 30 vacancies. He described pay and hours for the position: "The pay is $21.79 per hour for 15 hours per week, and equipment and uniforms are furnished," and directed interested applicants to the police department's website to apply.
