Acting Tongue Ranger District ranger briefs commissioners on drought, Elk Fire recovery and trail reopenings

Matt Inger, acting district ranger for the Tongue Ranger District of the Bighorn National Forest, provided the commission a quarterly update on June 1. He said the district is staffing up for field season, monitoring drought conditions and preparing fire crews. Inger said the purchase visitor center recently opened and that timber-thinning and disaster-recovery work in the Elk Fire footprint will continue this summer.
Inger said the district is coordinating with Wyoming Game and Fish and Sheridan County Weed and Pest for trail and invasive-species work. He noted crews reopened part of the Tongue River Trail after a significant rock slide to allow a scheduled race and said a longer-term repair will be planned. The district intends to use virtual fences on the mountain for the first time this summer and will continue fence repair and allotment work along forest boundaries.
Commissioners thanked Inger and discussed coordinating future press releases and public information as projects mobilize.
