Odessa board approves cell-phone policy pilot, schedules parent workshop

The Odessa School District Board of Directors voted Feb. 24 to implement a pilot cell-phone policy for students beginning April 6 and running through June 10.
Board members scheduled a parent workshop on the proposal for March 18 at 6:00 p.m. before the board's next regular meeting on March 25, and Superintendent Steve Fisk and staff said the pilot will allow the district to assess classroom impacts before making a permanent policy. During the meeting, community member Julie Wehr addressed the board and expressed support for the proposed pilot.
The motion to implement the pilot was moved by Board Member Sheena Starkel and seconded by Zach Schafer; the motion carried 4-0. The board set the pilot’s start and end dates in the motion and instructed staff to organize the parent workshop so stakeholders could review implementation details and expectations.
