Stony Creek board removes Computer Applications, adds Ethnic Studies and Financial Literacy to graduation requirements

The Stony Creek Joint Unified School District board voted June 24 to revise graduation requirements, removing Computer Applications and adding five credits in Ethnic Studies and five credits in Financial Literacy.
Trustee Krystal Craven moved the change and Trustee Cathie Bodeker seconded; the motion passed 4–0, with Trustee Delana Martin absent. The board specified the two new credits will be piloted with identified curricula during the 2025–26 year and fully adopted the following year pending results of the pilot.
Superintendent Emily Pendell and staff explained scheduling limits mean the new courses will be primarily offered at the senior level. The district said the change aligns with recent state mandates and will be incorporated into course planning for the coming year.
The board also directed staff to present proposed pilot curricula and scheduling adjustments at a future meeting so the pilot can begin in 2025–26.
