Community Education Coordinator Katie Beck proposed changes to the district’s school-readiness programs aimed at increasing instructional time and making wrap-around care more affordable. A December 10 packet memo from Beck and Michele Carlson recommends changing the Hatchlings mixed-age class to run 8:30 a.m.–12:30 p.m. (an increase of about 1 hour 15 minutes) and adopting a sliding-fee scale for Hatchlings and Little Wrens. The packet notes current Hatchlings tuition of $625 ($2.40/hr) and shows proposed category monthly fees ranging $69–$114, with annual fees $625–$1,025 depending on family-size/income categories.
The memo explains that state statute requires a sliding-fee scale for school-readiness programs and that prior use of ECFE funds to subsidize tuition has ceased. The proposal also recommends wrap-around care priced at $10 per week for students who ride the bus home and $50 per week for students who stay later; packet addendum shows combined monthly costs for families who enroll in both Hatchlings and afternoon Wrens Club ranging from approximately $477–$567 depending on income category. The board added Community Education Fee Structure Updates to the agenda for consideration.
