The district briefed the board on a state Department of Water Resources program offering free 2,500-gallon polyethylene water-storage tanks for domestic use. Mendocino Fire Protection District submitted the local request as the applicant, and MCCSD is coordinating resident sign-ups and short-term storage and distribution logistics.
Ryan, the superintendent, said the fire district placed a first order for 10 tanks and MCCSD had gathered a list of more than 40 applicants. "We were told by the state they want requests in ASAP, and so the deadline to request the tank is March 31 with MCCSD," he said. The tanks are being built to order; staff suggested the treatment-plant site as a short-term storage and pick-up point because it can be secured.
Staff warned that the program supplies only tanks — not installation, permitting or plumbing — and advised residents to check county permitting and historic-district cladding requirements. The tanks are approximately 102 inches wide by 78 inches tall; the fire district and volunteers have offered to assist with distribution and possible installation logistics, but any installation or permitting remains the homeowner's responsibility.
