Mendota Unified trustees elect officers during annual organizational meeting; recusals noted

The Mendota Unified School District Board of Trustees held its annual organizational meeting on Dec. 18, 2024, and elected officers for the coming year. By recorded votes the board approved Salvador Ochoa as president, Sherry Charles as vice president and Sergio Valdez as clerk; each motion recorded a 6-0 vote with the named officer recused from the vote.
Board Secretary Dr. Paul Lopez opened the organizational process, stating he "will initiate the Annual Organizational Meeting Process." Nominations were made from the dais: S. Valdez nominated Ochoa for president (6-0, Ochoa recused), J. Zavala nominated Charles for vice president (6-0, Charles recused), and S. Ochoa nominated Valdez for clerk (6-0, Valdez recused). The board also made committee appointments for Fresno County district organization representation with similar recorded 6-0 votes and stated recusals.
The elections followed the board's roll-call procedures and were recorded by the clerk. Trustees also used the session to confirm other organizational matters including meeting dates and representatives to county committees. No formal challenge to the officer elections was recorded in open session.
