Merced County Board overturns two interdistrict transfer denials, allows students to attend Romero School

The Merced County Board of Education voted Aug. 19 to overturn Gustine Unified School District's denials of interdistrict transfer requests for Students #2024-05 and #2024-06 for the 2024–2025 school year, enabling both students to attend Romero School.
The motion to overturn the denials was moved by Board Member Geneva Brett and seconded by Dennis Hanks. The board recorded the motion as carried by roll call, 4-0 (Fred H. Honoré, Dennis Hanks, Tim Razzari and Geneva Brett voting yes; Frank Fagundes absent). The minutes state: "The motion carried with a vote of 4-0." The action applies only to the named interdistrict transfer requests and is effective for the 2024–25 school year as recorded in the board minutes.
Separately, Appeal #2024-07 was withdrawn by the parent, Anita Patina; the minutes note that her son, Mattheu Chavez, will remain at Dos Palos High School. The board took the appeals under Education Code 35146 and returned to open session to announce its dispositions.
