Board plans First Student contract renewal, explores accessible big-bus option

Superintendent Brent Barry told the Phoenix-Talent School Board on Dec. 11 that the district will meet with First Student in the coming week to prepare a contract renewal proposal.
"We would be meeting with First Student to work on a proposal in the next week or so," Barry said. The superintendent said the contract must be completed by Jan. 30 and staff expect to present an item at the Jan. 8 board meeting.
Director Dawn Watson reminded the board that, during the previous RFP process, stakeholders raised the possibility of a high-capacity accessible bus (approximately 84-seat) to accommodate a rider using a wheelchair or other accessibility needs. Barry said other districts such as Medford and Central Point use First Student and the district is exploring coordinated timing for RFPs and renewals with neighboring districts.
The minutes record planning steps but do not include cost estimates or final vendor terms; the board did not take a formal vote on contract terms at this meeting.
