The Parks and Recreation Commission voted Aug. 6 to recommend that the city purchase Sarasota playground equipment separately from installation services to expedite construction and help meet an existing grant deadline. Chair Taylor moved the recommendation and a commissioner seconded; the motion passed by roll call.
A presenter updating the commission described survey results about community equipment preferences and proposed using a cooperative agreement—allowing the city to "piggyback" on another public agency's bid and negotiated pricing—instead of issuing a new RFP. The presenter said PlayWell has a cooperative agreement the city can use and that PlayWell representatives will visit the site to review the footprint and proposed pieces.
Commissioners pressed staff on ADA surfacing, multiple equipment options within PlayWell’s catalog and coordination of site prep and installation. One commissioner said they wanted the ad‑hoc playground committee involved during the vendor visit so members can see catalog options firsthand. Christy, the recreation manager, said staff will coordinate the site visit and bring back final components for the commission’s review before council consideration.
"It's called a cooperative agreement," the presenter said when explaining the procurement approach. Chair Taylor framed the motion as aimed at expediting construction and ensuring compliance with the grant timeline.
