April Olson, Director of Curriculum & Student Learning, presented proposed revisions to the district’s Personal Electronic Devices (PED) policy and related administrative rules and asked Board members for feedback. Olson emphasized the Board’s role in monitoring implementation, upholding student rights, engaging the community and ensuring transparency in the policy process.
Olson outlined scope considerations for the Board’s review: guidance for device storage, procedures to promote consistent but flexible implementation across grade levels, strengthened communication with stakeholders and an evaluation process to measure policy effectiveness and implementation progress. She walked members through a sample policy, identified specific decision points for the Board and invited members to submit comments and questions before a formal adoption step.
At the meeting, Olson said the administration intends to return with a revised policy for adoption on a near-term timeline so that policy provisions would take effect at the start of the following calendar year. The Board did not vote on the policy on Sept. 24; members committed to review the proposed language and provide feedback to staff.
