Attendance support shifted to teams after staff attrition; committee hears plan
Summary
Committee members asked whether cuts to attendance-support roles would reduce personalized outreach. Staff said retirements and attrition, not layoffs, changed role counts and that schools now use attendance teams and success teams to sustain outreach without added budget lines.

Committee members raised concern about the removal or reconfiguration of attendance-related positions and whether students would lose valued personal outreach as a result. Staff said that some positions were not eliminated by firing but through retirement and attrition, and that where positions were eliminated, affected employees were offered other roles without salary reductions.
Susan described a shift toward a team-based approach to attendance improvement, with building-level attendance teams and a ninth-grade success team focused on early intervention. "At the high school level, the 9th grade success team among many other things that they do is a focus on attendance as well," staff said, and added that the district intends to continue collaboration with building leaders and unions in future budget years to revisit role structures and resource allocations.
The committee asked staff to continue monitoring the results of the team approach and to bring back outcomes and resource requests if additional investment is required to meet board-set attendance goals.
