Committee member calls language-access budget for families "light"; staff cites existing supports

A committee member, Alex Kearney, questioned whether the district's language-access line items are adequate given district demographics. Kearney said the district enrollment is about 1,458 students with roughly 11.88% identified as limited-English proficient (about 173 students) and that the budget lists only $5,000 for interpretation/translation services and two staff positions dedicated to that work. "That feels like not a lot of resources for 173 students," Kearney said.
Staff responded that the $5,000 figure is for interpretation and translation services only, not English-language-development programs, and emphasized that the district relies on bilingual ELD teachers, classified staff, administrators and a contractor (Lingua) to provide interpretation and family outreach. "This is just for interpretation and translation services, not for English language development programs," staff said. Staff also described district efforts to increase bilingual staffing through a grow-your-own program and bilingual stipends.
Kearney said the numbers suggested possible gaps in communication access and asked staff to correlate demographic percentages with allocated dollars in future budget materials. Staff agreed to provide clearer linkage between percentages of families using non-English home languages and the dollars allocated for language access in follow-up documents.
