Dr. Carolyn Bernal presented three superintendent goals at the Oct. 9 work session. On attendance she said the district is working with principals and attendance teams and set a specific target: "The target is a 10% decrease in chronic absenteeism, increasing the number of students attending 90% or more of the time." Board members discussed causes for absenteeism and supported the goal as foundational for academic gains.
To build board capacity, staff will run three data-focused work sessions and use pre- and post-assessments to aim for a 30% increase in board members’ understanding of educational terminology and student-achievement measures. On student experience, Bernal cited the Youth Truth survey as the baseline and listed priority measures—having at least one trusted adult, feeling treated fairly, and experiencing challenging classes—with individual schools preparing strategies to share with the board.
Directors asked about connections to state systems; Dr. Bernal said Goal 3 stems from Youth Truth recommendations and is not part of the state LPGT system. The board plans progress checks in November, February and April to monitor data-literacy growth and school-level updates on attendance and student-experience strategies.
