Lt. Chris Daniel of the Lubbock County Sheriff's Office asked the court to approve submitting a Healing the Shield grant to fund regional first-responder mental wellness and training programs. Daniel described the repeated trauma officers face across a career, saying a typical law enforcement officer "deals with 800 traumatic events compared to an average person, which may see 1 to 4 in a lifetime," and urged the court to support full funding from the state to create regional services and nonprofit partnerships.
Judge Parrish and commissioners expressed support and the court approved the resolution to submit the grant application and designated the judge to sign all necessary documents. Daniel said the program would extend services to volunteer firefighters and other emergency personnel in the region.
