Corvallis School Board hears budget pressures as PERS, staffing costs rise

The Corvallis School District Board of Directors received a budget update Feb. 6 that stressed rising personnel costs and uncertainty in state and federal funding. Finance Director Lauren Wolfe told the board that “Currently, the District spends $0.34 for every dollar spent on payroll, which is expected to increase to $0.43 per dollar in the next biennium,” and said operating expenditures are driven primarily by staffing and collective bargaining obligations.
Wolfe described outreach plans to keep staff informed and said the district is pursuing targeted discussions with groups that could be affected by reductions. She also told the board the district would continue to subsidize student meals if federal support changed: staff described state and federal funding for food service programs but said the District also subsidizes them. Board members asked clarifying questions about enrollment trends and the difficulty of long-range forecasting; Chair Luhui Whitebear urged community engagement in the upcoming budget process.
