TDHS reports 200+ athletes, introduces 'HAWKS' values as OSAA reclassification looms

Jim Taylor, vice principal and athletic director at The Dalles High School, told the board more than 200 students are practicing this week across six sports and that the athletic department introduced a set of core values labeled "HAWKS" (Hard work, Accountability, We is greater than me, Knowledge, Sportsmanship).
Taylor described a one-year football arrangement with the Greater Oregon League (Ontario) and said OSAA is considering reducing classifications from six to five, which could change league alignments. He said TDHS would watch the reclassification process and work to avoid being placed against much larger schools that would increase travel and competitive imbalance. Directors expressed support for lobbying during the OSAA process to keep the Tri-Valley League intact and to limit long travel for student-athletes.
Chair Hege and others suggested board members provide talking points and represent the district's interests during OSAA meetings. No formal board action was taken; AD Taylor said initial classification proposals will be released soon for public viewing.
