District 281 Youth Council urges staff-student relationship building, bias work and active learning

Members of the District 281 Youth Council presented priorities and specific recommendations to the Robbinsdale Area Schools board during the May 5 meeting.
Anthony Williams, Executive Director of Community Education, and staff leads Dr. Anne Beaton and Nicole Plagge introduced the council and its research-based priorities for 2024–25: "Building relationships between students and staff," "Staff identify and examine biases," and "Active learning and engaging lessons." The council recommended naming those priorities in School Improvement Plans (SIPs), using them to guide program selection and professional development, allowing teachers time to rework curriculum after training, and co-planning and co-facilitating professional learning with students.
The recommendations were presented for the board's consideration; the minutes record the proposals but do not document a formal board action adopting those specific recommendations. Board and staff follow-up was implied by inclusion in the Strategic Plan/priority work agenda items.
