Freelancers Union director Andrea Gordillo outlines services and plans to expand hubs nationally

Andrea Gordillo, the newly appointed executive director of Freelancers Union, described the organization’s services and expansion plans during a BronxNet interview.

"So the Freelancers Union was founded over 30 years ago, in Brooklyn," Gordillo said, summarizing the group's origins. She cited the union's member-facing supports and statistics in the interview: "There's over 60,000,000 independent workers in The United States, over 1,000,000 here in New York City," and said the union helps freelancers navigate insurance and other benefits through a combination of brokerage products, member services and public support.

Gordillo outlined services available without a fee for members, including one-on-one benefit navigation, quarterly workshops on tax season and open enrollment, community hubs (the transcript references a Sunset Park hub) and programs that pair freelancers with local hiring opportunities. She said the union sustains operations through optional product purchases and donations and that member participation strengthens the organization’s advocacy work.

Looking ahead, Gordillo said the union plans to open additional brick-and-mortar hubs outside New York City and to press members’ policy priorities at state and federal levels, including retirement access, paid leave and unemployment protections for independent workers.
