Geneseo board hears update on gym demolition, mercury abatement and timeline

The district’s project presenter said the capital improvement project began in April and “we've made good ground moving forward.” The presenter described mercury-containing layers under the gym floor that were removed down to concrete and said bleachers were taken out and will be replaced with a new system at no cost to the district. Asbestos abatement in boys' and girls' locker rooms is largely complete and block removal in the gym will open the space for further demolition.

Board members pressed for schedule and safety details. The presenter acknowledged finding “additional bins” embedded in the floor that delayed the gym work by about two weeks but said the contingency in the schedule keeps the timeline intact. He told the board the gym will be closed during demolition, the site will be fenced, and traffic circulation will be re-routed to minimize student exposure: “we can enter the site straight in and straight out without going around vehicles,” the presenter said. He set June 29 as the date the next demolition phase intensifies and described plans to resurface — not fully replace — several roofs over the summer to save money and time.

The update also covered reuse of removed lockers: the presenter said the lockers are stored in a shipping container and will be reused in rebuilt team rooms. The board requested continued scheduling updates and a follow-up at the next construction-management (OACM) meeting.

The board did not take a separate vote on this update; the construction work is proceeding under the district’s approved capital project timeline.
