The Geneseo Central School District board on March 23 approved a $269,650 contract to remove and replace the high school gymnasium floor, the board's chair announced during a special meeting. "The the amount for the gymnasium floor is $269,650," the chair said before the board voted by voice to approve the motion.
District staff explained the floor remediation was separated from other bids because mercury-abatement testing affects removal costs. "The reason why this was separate is because of the mercury abatement and some further testing needed to be done," said Kevin, a district staff member handling the project, who added that testing concluded and the removal was bid as a standalone item. Kevin told the board the gym demolition and rebuild is scheduled to begin April 1, run through December 2027 for major work, and that final project closeout is expected by March 2028.
Board members and staff discussed operational impacts during construction, including reduced seating, potential streaming to other rooms, and use of alternate venues for practices and games. Kevin said district staff are exploring community spaces and conversations with SUNY Geneseo to host events as needed. The board voted unanimously in favor of the contract; the chair then moved to adjourn and the meeting concluded at about 5:03 p.m.
