Board approves 2026–27 calendar after extended debate over Labor Day start

The board voted to approve the proposed 2026–27 school calendar (proposed start Aug. 31) after more than an hour of discussion about labor-day timing, family vacations and impacts on athletics and FFA activities. Superintendent Kim explained late Labor Day this year created a tradeoff and said staff consulted neighboring districts; board members cited mixed public feedback but noted a staff survey showed a majority favored starting before Labor Day.
During the motion and voice vote, Chair (speaker 1) called for a vote and announced, "the ayes have it," recording at least one 'nay' in the transcript but not a numerical roll call. Several board members stressed the need to begin calendar planning earlier for 2027–28 to give families more lead time, and the board asked staff to convene the calendar committee earlier next year.
