Board member urges updated attendance policy to align with current practice

Board member Mr. Larabino told colleagues that the district should adopt a board-level attendance policy that reflects current practices across elementary, middle and high schools and the strategies presented at the meeting.
"I would like to see a policy that aligns with some of the things that have been presented tonight," Larabino said during questions. He noted the existing policy was adopted decades ago and suggested the board draft a policy while leaving implementation details to regulations. Staff responded that a regulation is being written and that the board will have an opportunity to review a policy draft.
Larabino commended staff work and framed the ask as codifying the substance of current practice into board policy while preserving the district’s authority to create implementing regulations. No formal policy vote occurred at the meeting; staff said drafting work is underway.
