Margaret Lindsey, the interim Finance Director, briefed the Finance Committee on Governor-approved amendments to the FY2026–27 School Budget and said the School Division is requesting an additional appropriation of approximately $2.6 million. She said that because the requested appropriation exceeds the statutory one-percent threshold, state rules require a public hearing before the Board may appropriate the funds.
Lindsey said preliminary information indicated the increased state funding formula requires an additional local contribution of roughly $555,240; she noted that staff sought clarification from the Virginia Department of Education but that the change may relate to either the Virginia Preschool Initiative or state compensation supplements. Lindsey recommended advertising a public hearing on August 3 with public hearing and appropriation action anticipated during the Board's second meeting in August.
No formal Finance Committee recommendation was required beyond acknowledging the procedural steps and the need to advertise the public hearing. The Board will receive the advertisement and conduct the hearing before any appropriation.
