Uintah City Council adopts state-required Data Privacy Policy; implementation expected to span years

Uintah City Council voted unanimously on Dec. 2 to adopt a Data Privacy Policy required by state law, with City Recorder Michelle Mortensen outlining key obligations and an approximate 10-year implementation timeline. Council Member Combe moved to approve the policy; Council Member Patterson seconded and the motion carried.
Mortensen told the council the policy will require staff to identify and inventory city documents, post notices to citizens about what information is collected, establish retention schedules, require employee training, extend requirements to contractors and notify residents in the event of a data breach. She said this is the first step and that municipalities must file reports each year as plans are developed. "This applies to contractors of the city as well," Mortensen said in the presentation.
Council discussion was brief and framed the policy as a needed modernization of recordkeeping and public-notice practices; no vote details beyond unanimous approval were recorded. The council directed staff to begin the inventory and prepare the notifications and training plans noted in the policy.
