Burr Oak Library officials urge county not to reappoint CKLS representative after $6,000 funding cut

Kelly and Becky McNichols told Jewell County Commissioners on June 30 that a recently passed policy by the Central Kansas Library System (CKLS) will cut $6,000 in funding to the Burr Oak Library and requires them to raise the mill levy by about 0.5 to 0.6. "This policy cuts $6,000.00 in funding to the Burr Oak library and will cause them to raise the mill levy anywhere from .5 or .6 more," the minutes record.
The McNicholses also said state funding that normally provided $1,000 was cut and that Jan Carlson, the county's appointed CKLS representative, made the motion to pass the policy at a CKLS meeting. They asked the county commissioners not to reappoint Carlson to the CKLS board. Commissioners did not take action on the reappointment during the meeting; they heard the public comment and noted the budget concern.
