The Village Board adopted an amendment to Title 10 (zoning signs) to address electronic message signs. Community development staff described the update as a response to changing technology, development practices and community preferences and said the CDC recommended approval after a hearing with no objectors.
Staff explained the changes: "In the zoning ordinance sign regulations, we are going to permit governmental agencies to use electronic message signs even in residential zoning districts. Currently not allowed to do that. And secondly, we're removing the minimum of separation requirement, between electronic message signs. Right now that, separation requirement is 1 mile." The board voted to pass the ordinance by roll call (4–0).
The change permits governmental use of electronic message signs in residential zones and removes the prior one-mile spacing mandate; specific permitting, design and operational standards will be enforced through the zoning/permit process.
