Water superintendent reports tower refilled after leak; warns well is running dry

Ronnie, the village water superintendent, told the Village of Stronghurst Board on March 3 that a recent leak had almost emptied the town's water tower and crews have been hauling water around the clock to refill it. The tower has been refilled and operations are currently normal, Ronnie said, but the well “is not getting enough time to rest,” a condition staff blamed on ongoing dry weather.
Board members heard that the well is under sustained strain: staff said the aquifer that supplies the well appears to be drawing down and that rain would help relieve pressure on the system. Ronnie also reported increasing occurrences of tree roots filling septic lines; crews have been opening and cleaning those lines when they occur.
Mayor Brendan Schaley told the board the village should assume responsibility for handling root-filled septic lines, but he said the board needs to adopt a formal policy spelling out when the village will intervene and how costs will be allocated. No formal policy or vote was recorded at the meeting. The board did not set a timeline for drafting the policy during the March 3 session.
