Board hears calls to strengthen preschool–kindergarten alignment to improve kindergarten readiness

School staff told trustees that kindergarten readiness has declined and that many children now enter school without expected prereading, writing and social skills.
Melissa, a licensed school counselor, described repeated examples of children entering kindergarten without basic school routines and academic readiness: "They don't know how to write their name... they don't know their colors," she said, and urged stronger preschool partnerships and better transitions between ISD preschool providers and Monroe kindergarten teachers.
Board members asked staff to examine preschool capacity, alignment of learning expectations and options for expanding early childhood seats or partnerships. Staff said increased preschool access and intentional collaboration would likely reduce early learning gaps but will require coordination with the ISD and community partners.
