Board debates opt-in requirement and language changes for suicide-prevention instruction

The board spent significant time on revisions to the health-and-well-being and suicide-prevention policy, focusing on whether instruction should require parental opt-in and on the wording of professional development goals. Several trustees argued for opt-in parental permission for any instruction, citing parental authority; others warned opt-in can become a barrier and leave vulnerable students without support if parents miss communications.

Trustees also recommended changing language that describes training for staff from phrasing that seeks to "prevent" suicide to language focused on "identify[ing]" risks and warning signs, reducing the implication that training alone prevents fatal outcomes. The board asked staff to refine the instruction/notification language and to explicitly label assemblies or outside presentations as "instruction" for the purpose of parental notification and consent procedures.
