County explains new dual-right and signalized u‑turn design to replace left turn at SR 16
Summary
St. Johns County said the redesign converts an unsignalized left-turn lane into a right-turn lane feeding a signalized u‑turn timed with the main signal; an additional dual right-turn lane will be added from Industry Center Road.

Chris Gatchel, project manager for St. Johns County Public Works, described how the project will change turning movements at the intersection.
"The current unsignalized left turn lane will convert into a right turn lane that will guide you to the signalized u-turn that is timed with this signal to allow for the most efficient movement of vehicles through this intersection," Gatchel said. He added that the right‑hand lane will maintain a westbound movement onto State Road 16 while the left lane will guide drivers into the u‑turn.
Gatchel said the county will add an additional turn lane so there will be a dual right‑turn lane coming off Industry Center Road; the left‑hand lane will route drivers into the u‑turn lane. The design relies on a green u‑turn arrow to control the movement and is intended to reduce conflicts associated with permissive left turns.
County staff noted the turn lane referenced is presently under construction and will be striped and signed when finished to provide clearer driver guidance.
