St. Johns County outlines FDOT-backed redesign at Stratton Boulevard and State Road 16

Chris Gatchel, project manager for St. Johns County Public Works, described a Florida Department of Transportation‑recommended redesign of the Stratton Boulevard and State Road 16 intersection.
"So they selected this design as the most efficient way to move traffic along State Road 16," Gatchel said, explaining the overall purpose of the project. He identified the site as Stratton Boulevard and State Road 16 and said the FDOT study found the intersection and nearby Industry Center Road were due for improvements.
County staff described the work as a reconfiguration to improve through and turning movements and to add pedestrian facilities. Gatchel said the plan replaces an unsignalized left‑turn lane with a circulation scheme centered on a signalized u‑turn timed to the intersection signal. Construction elements include new lane striping, signage and a turn lane currently under construction.
The county said the changes are intended to increase the efficiency of vehicle movement through the intersection and provide clearer guidance to drivers when the work is complete.
